Resolutely oriented towards skills and professions, the Iba Der Thiam University of Thiès (UIDT) created in 2005 began its educational activities in 2007. Named by its current name in 2021, the UIDT has 5 institutions: an institute, the University Institute of Technology (IUT) and four Training and Research Units (UFR):
- Science and Technology (SET);
- Health Sciences (Health);
- Humanities and Social Sciences (SES);
- Engineering Sciences (IS).
The UIDT also has a multidisciplinary and transversal doctoral school: the Doctoral School of Sustainable Development and Society (ED-2DS), which allows about 200 doctoral students to carry out their research work. Our institution was the first in Senegal to have a female rector at its head, an example that has since been followed by several universities in Senegal. It currently has 145 teacher-researchers, including 127 men and 18 women, spread across the various institutions.
The number of students for the 2022-2023 academic year was 8152, 48% of whom were women. As part of the implementation of the National Strategy for Gender Equity and Equality (SNEEG), the UIDT created a Gender Unit in 2020 in charge of, among other missions:
- propose an annual action plan with all stakeholders;
- create a database on the gender of the different components of the university (Per, PATS, students);
- ensure that the differentiated needs and interests of women and men are taken into account in the planning, programming and budgeting of activities;
- support the University in advocating for the promotion of gender and resource mobilization for the promotion of gender equity and equality.
The gender unit of the UIDT ensures that the needs and expectations of all components of the university are taken into account for a harmonious functioning.
