The University of Sine Saloum El Hadj Ibrahima NIASS (USSEIN), is an agricultural university. Its mission is to train students in agriculture and related professions for food security, sustainable development and prosperity. The creation of the University of USSEIN (Decree 2013-173 of January 25, 2013) responds to a socio-economic necessity because it allows the Government of Senegal to provide an appropriate answer to the development needs of four regions of the Center, by promoting their resources and assets. The decision is included in an academic politicy to balance the spatial distribution of university institutions and staff. Anchored in the Peanut Production Basin of Senegal, USSEIN is established on three campuses (Kaolack, Fatick and Kaffrine), with thirty-six licenses, four masters and twelve departments distributed in four UFRs (Training and Research Units) which are:
- Agronomic Sciences, Livestock, Fisheries-Aquaculture and Nutrition (SAEPAN);
- Economics, Legal Sciences and Tourism (SEJT)
- Social and Environmental Sciences (SSE)
- Fundamental and Engineering Sciences (SFI).
During the 2023-2024 academic year, female students make up 47% of the total student population at USSEIN. Women represent 26% of the total of teaching and research staff and 30% for the administrative staff.
USSEIN is truly committed to gender issues, as showed by several initiatives. At the head of the university, a woman assumes the role of rector and she strongly supports gender issues. In addition, a gender manager has been nominated to the USSEIN union coordination and gender problematic is integrated into the academic programs. Specific courses on the sociology of gender and leadership are provided, thus illustrating the university's commitment to this theme. In the main axes of PETTAL (Promouvoir un enseignement supérieur professionnalisant ancré dans les Territoires pour accompagner la Transition Agroécologique des systèmes Alimentaires), an inclusive project held in the university, USSEIN has recommended an in-depth study in gender questions, «Diagnosis and reference situation Gender and social equity of USSEIN”. The results were decisive in the implementation of a gender strategy in the university. The impact aimed is to strengthening the university politic to gender equality and social equity. The recommendations formulated through the results of the study are to establish:
- A gender office attached to the rectorate.
- A gender focal points at the UFR level.
- A framework for consultation between the different UFRs and the rectorate to better understand decisions given the transversality of the gender issue.
- A functional and accessible documentation center dedicated to gender issues.
USSEIN created also the "Dekkal Yaakaar incubator (restore hope), aimed at contributing to the professional integration of young people and women through green and digital entrepreneurship.
